Almost 50 years of dedication to the production and development of natural enemies to control the most common pests in both horticulture and agriculture has resulted in the holistic approach that we can offer our clients today. It starts with the soil where all cultivation begins and ends with a residue-free harvest.
Research and development, worldwide production and distribution of solutions and knowhow and knowledge sharing are the three important pillars of our company. Cornerstones that are inseparably connected and continue to grow.
The ongoing drive to discover and utilize natural principles forms the backbone of Koppert’s activities.
In recent years, Koppert’s extensive know-how in micro-organisms, biostimulants and pheromones has inspired countless solutions that have improved plant resilience to the point that diseases hardly stand a chance. It is thanks to the company’s great perseverance that a whole variety of specific mites can now be introduced to combat a large number of infestations. Similar ground-breaking discoveries with regard to pollination solutions have provided the basis for enormous production efficiency and quality improvement in many crops.
The NatuGro system developed by Koppert consists of a mix of beneficial biological micro-organisms, plant-specific substances and soil analysis, supplemented with our professional advice. NatuGro represents a totally comprehensive approach to both the crop and its environment by creating optimal soil conditions and maximizing crop resilience.
An optimal mix of beneficial fungi and bacteria, vitamins, pheromones, nematodes and other plant-specific substances is introduced to make both crop and the environment more resilient against diseases and pests. In many areas and cultivations this has led to a substantial reduction in the use of chemical crop protection products and artificial fertilizers.
Each pest has specific characteristics which can vary greatly in terms of cultivation, region and season. Koppert has been successfully producing natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps and mites, to help growers to restore the natural balance in their crops for decades. Made to measure solutions and knowledge are the key to this success.
Koppert’s pest management solutions are widely used throughout the horticultural industry and have dramatically reduced the use of agro-chemicals over the years. One of the greatest impact areas has been in tomato cultivation. The use of crop protection chemicals in this field has been decreased by 95%.
Pollination is an annual challenge when it comes to the production of vegetables, fruit and seeds. Well pollinated crops result in considerably higher yields and it improves the quality and shelf life of both seeds and fruit.
In 1988, Koppert brought out its first Natupol pollination solutions by introducing bumblebees for commercial pollination. Koppert now produces millions of bumblebees annually for a variety of applications which help growers around the world to cultivate their crops successfully. Apart from the increased yield and quality improvement, the bumblebees achieved a better working environment and reduced labour costs for the grower. Without the application of these bumblebees, many of these cultivations would no longer be economically feasible.
The success of biological or integrated crop protection is greatly dependent on the time and manner in which it is applied. Koppert is constantly searching for methods to make these applications as effective as possible. Over the years, Koppert has developed products that recognize pests at an early stage through (sticky) traps and signalling devices, so that natural enemies can be introduced in good time.
Koppert has developed various tools to enable natural enemies to be introduced in an effective way. Blowing devices have ensured that natural enemies are successfully able to reach crops in the correct way and in the right quantities in places where access is difficult.
Koppert develops seed dressings or coatings for large, arable crops cultivated in rows, such as soya, rice, maize, and grains. The products contain micro-organisms and other stimulating ingredients that are beneficial for the crop. These promote the crop's growth and make the plant less vulnerable to pathogens found in the soil and on the seed, including harmful nematodes. The seed dressings lead to a stronger, healthier and much more productive crop, more resistant to drought and disease.
In recent years, large-scale crops have been treated with beneficial microbes, resulting in 20 – 50% reduction in the use of artificial fertilizers, moreover, growth and production increased up to 40%.
The ongoing drive to discover and utilize natural principles forms the backbone of Koppert’s activities. Although Koppert is primarily known for its products, the company is essentially a knowledge company. With our strong R&D base, we believe that sharing knowledge and training staff is an important step towards achieving sustainable agriculture and horticulture.
More than 300 professional consultants ensure that dealers and growers are supported in handling their challenges on a daily basis. Besides operational advice, they devote much time and effort towards communicating their basic knowledge concerning nature and its solutions. Koppert offers a variety of courses and works closely with universities around the world to make knowledge available to a wider target group. Koppert is convinced that knowledge and education are important elements for success.
